Dedicated server - unmanaged or managed

Post by Rodney » Tue Nov 14, 2017 1:03 pm

You website is so busy and popular that your webhost finds it difficult to cope with your demands. So now, it’s time for you to consider having a dedicated server. There are two choices you need to consider; managed or unmanaged server. Let’s deal with the unmanaged server first. With the unmanaged server, you receive it in its rawest form. You get the hardware and resources that go with the server, and an internet connection.

The web host houses the equipment and keeps it physically secure; otherwise you’re on your own. It’s up to you to keep it fresh and updated and functioning properly. You yourself are responsible for the daily administrative tasks that are necessary, if you have the skills to thrive in that environment. If you don’t have the skills for this, then you will need to employ IT staff who have the knowledge to work with server software. Otherwise, your task is almost impossible.

With all this flexibility and power that comes with an unmanaged server, you also have the responsibility and complexity that other people can’t handle, it just gets too much. Managed Web Hosting Managed hosting is a solution that takes the complexity out of a dedicated server. The greatest advantage is that you generally get a full turn-key service where the host takes care of the server administrative tasks. They will allow you to build a custom package that suits you. Some of the additional services may include database administration and management of your web applications. While you are basically outsourcing server administration, you do get a significant level of control through control panel software. Advanced control panel applications like cPanel’s (WHM) Web Host Manager and Plesk add ease to the process of server administration.

Now You know a dedicated server will provide all the resources and control you need, but it is also a more complex solution. If you’ve got the level of skill it requires, good. If not, you definitely need managed hosting. With the web host handling all the complicated tasks, you can enjoy the simplicity of shared hosting and still get all the benefits of a robust dedicated server. Most importantly, you can focus on other critical projects and just running your business. And running your own business itself can be difficult, with the responsibilities and choices you need to make daily. You definitely don’t need yet another headache to deal with. An unmanaged server, so the best option you have is a managed dedicated server, which simplifies everything for you. Unless you like the challenge of managing your own server, with the responsibilities and daily costs every day.

The only big difference is unmanaged or managed dedicated server is Price. Many companies monthly setup charge is very high. So is the manage server charge is very high. If you create own setup, your server charge is very low.

Great article, can be hard to read please edit it if you can so that it can be more readerable.

For users with less administrate knowledge, I will always recommend that you get a managed server.. once you pick up on the skills and experience perhaps you can then move onto unmanaged.
